Leimert Park Plaza, the historic center of the Black Arts District of South Los Angeles, will transform into a hub of rhythm and history on Saturday, June 27, as it hosts the LA Funk & Soul Summit. The free community event, presented by No Easy Props with support from the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, aims to preserve and honor the legacy of Locking, widely considered the first Street Dance to emerge from Los Angeles.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a series of 40-minute social dance workshops led by pioneers and cultural icons. The lineup of instructors includes Damita Jo Freeman of "Soul Train," Anthony Thomas of Janet Jackson’s "Rhythm Nation" tour and the LA City Lockers, Richie Rich of Dance Connection, Mr. Kleen of the M.D.’s, and Locking Jerry, also known as Flomaster, a protégé of Greg Campbellock.

Throughout the afternoon, artists will share historical insights, personal anecdotes, and signature movements from their respective eras, offering an intergenerational perspective on the evolution of Los Angeles street dance culture.

"LA Funk & Soul Summit is about honoring the people who created the culture, sharing their knowledge with the next generation, and bringing the community together through music, dance, and joy," Asia One, founder of No Easy Props said.

Following the workshops, the event will transition into an outdoor street dance party, featuring an all-funk music format curated by The Funk Freaks DJ collective. The gathering is open to the public and will include local vendors, lifestyle brands, and a designated hospitality area for cultural leaders and the creative community.
